Guns

 Why is it that people who claim to be Christian feel the need to carry guns in church? Some of them are the same who have stickers on their cars that say, "In God we trust". I believe that if Jesus were to show up in our churches today, as He did in the temple during his lifetime on earth, he would become angry and throw out people and guns for desecrating a place of worship. There are so many reasons why I think it is wrong to carry guns in church. To list a few:

1. Our churches should be a place of peace and worship. Where there are guns, there is no peace. At least there is not the image of peace. And how do we worship an all powerful God while carrying a gun for "protection".

2. What does it say to the world when it sees people who claim to trust God and teach "turn the other cheek", "love one another", "don't kill" carrying guns? 

3. With multiple people carrying guns in a place with many people close together, there is danger that something will happen and someone will get hurt or killed.

4. By insisting that there is the need to carry a gun, people are taking the way of the world. The world says "I have the right to protect myself or my family at any cost" so I need to have a gun.  

Just because the state says anyone can carry and just because there MAY be an instance when a shooter from outside comes into a church, does not make it OK to carry guns in church. 

Of course, I believe it is wrong for anyone to be able to carry in public. I do not like to see guns carried in stores or other public places. So churches are no exception, but I feel it is even more wrong to carry in church.

Obeying God

Exodus 5. When Moses did what God had commanded for him to do, things got worse for the people of Israel. When I do something that I think God wants me to do and things do not go well, there are a couple of thoughts I have: 1. Maybe I am not really doing what God wants, maybe what I am doing is what I want. 2. I am doing the right thing, why doesn't God honor my actions? Since we know what happens later in the story, we learn that God does do what He says He would do, but in His time and in His way. Our duty is to do what He asks us to do.

Reverence

In reading Exodus, it has stuck me how ritualistic the Israelites were and how all of the rituals were commanded by God. It is hard for us today to fully understand all of the rituals because that is all it means to us, just rituals. But it was through these rituals and requirements that people were able to show reverence to God and his majesty was manifested. We have become so relaxed in our practice and experience of "worship" that I think we have lost some of the awe, respect and fear of God. I for one need to be more respectful, more reverent and more in awe of God when I enter His presence or when I enter the church to worship.
